Ick

And I don't mean the fish disease. Did you know there is a fish disease called ick? Apparently goldfish get it. I recently read an article that some bigger fish are getting it now too. Maybe salmon?

I digress. The point here is to note that DC is officially gross. And I am gross when I am in DC. The reason for this unpleasantness? Humidity plain and simple. The temperature is tolerable, but the air is like pea soup (not the tasty kind) and there is not a hint of a breeze anywhere. I walked outside for 20 minutes and looked like one of those fat people at disney: sweaty, smelly, uncomfortable, and in search of anything air conditioned. Ugh. Don't they have some sort of solution for this sweating thing yet? I know sweating is the body's way of cooling itself, blah, blah, blah. But if there is no breeze, no cooling takes place. And then you're just wet. Yuck.

A different kind of journey

After traveling across the country for a week, I thought the travels were over for the moment. But I guess they never really are. I moved in to my apartment in Arlington this week and I'm exploring the ins and outs of my new neighborhood, my new apartment, and life in a different part of the country. This is more or less 'home' for me, so it's not like Virginia is a new place. But I have never lived in the DC area when I wasn't living with one or both of my parents. It's a whole new adventure.

First comes the settling in and nesting. All of my stuff arrived on Thursday in good condition thanks to the professional movers. The only problem is that moving then requires unpacking and placing things where they are supposed to go. It also requires somehow spending hundreds of dollars on new items I didn't know that I didn't have but apparently have been living (and suffering) without. I bought everything from bath mats to paper towels to a vat of lemon juice. I have no bed at the moment, but that should be remedied at the end of the month when I inherit sister's bed. I need a desk. I need to not have such a ridiculous collection of shoes or books. Fortunately all of my outdoor gear, apart from the bike, fits into a single closet.

Beyond the nesting, I have actually sort of developed a social life, or my version of it anyway. I have been 'out for drinks' twice and had a pleasant 4th of July with friends, as opposed to home alone. Perhaps this DC thing isn't so bad after all.

I will say once again for the record that if there is any higher being out there, please eliminate the humidity once and for all. It makes me want to die.
